From Rooftop to Reality: Solar Innovation with Jigsaw Housing Association

Residential house with solar panels on roof and chimney

Project Highlights

In-roof solar PV installed on a mixed estate of bungalows and hipped-roof houses, fitted as part of a re-roofing programme.

Client: Jigsaw Housing Association
Property types: Bungalows and hipped-roof houses on a mixed estate
Our scope: In-roof solar PV arrays connected to Solax inverters, with a tenant monitoring app
Delivery partners: DLP Services (our sister company, led the re-roofing), with roofing manufacturers Wienerberger and Sandtoft
Roofing system: Sandtoft integrated roofing system
Standard: All systems installed to MCS standards

The challenge

Jigsaw Housing Association is working to tackle fuel poverty and improve energy performance across its housing stock. This project brought that aim to a mixed estate where two quite different roof types needed to be handled well: straightforward bungalow roofs and more complex hipped roofs.

The task was to fit solar PV to both types of home so that it worked with the roof and sat within the wider re-roofing programme, while keeping high-quality outcomes.

Our Solution

Solar was planned as part of the roof, not an add-on to it. That meant working closely with three partners:

  • DLP Services, our sister company, led the re-roofing programme.
  • Sandtoft, whose integrated roofing system was used on the project.
  • Wienerberger, the other roofing manufacturer involved.

Working this way allowed an in-roof solar system to be integrated into the new roof covering and installed by Green Sky Renewables as part of one joined-up programme. For the hipped-roof houses, we did not use a one-size-fits-all layout. Each of these properties had a tailored system design, with the arrays split across the available roof planes. This kept generation as high as possible without compromising the look of the roof.

  1. Re-roof first. DLP Services stripped and re-roofed each property using Sandtoft’s integrated roofing system.
  2. In-roof solar PV next. Green Sky Renewables then installed in-roof solar PV arrays connected to Solax inverters.
  3. Bungalows. These allowed for straightforward installs.
  4. Hipped-roof houses. These needed tailored designs, with arrays split across roof planes.
  5. Tenant visibility. The user-friendly monitoring app gives tenants visibility of their system’s output and their personal energy usage.
  6. Compliance. All systems were installed to MCS standards, which supports improved EPC ratings and helps future-proof the homes for regulatory compliance.

This was not our first project with this team. As with previous collaborations, the same re-roof-then-solar sequence was followed.

The Outcome

  • Clean, well-integrated installations. The Sandtoft system’s compatibility with the new roofing materials meant installations were neat and sat well with the roof structure.
  • Designed for each roof. Whether on a single-slope bungalow or a multi-slope hipped roof, each array was designed to maximise solar gain while complementing the roof.
  • Renewable electricity for residents. All residents now benefit from a reliable source of renewable electricity.
  • Export opportunity. Residents can also export surplus energy under the Smart Export Guarantee.
  • Practical benefits. In practical terms, this means lower bills, improved household efficiency and a meaningful step away from reliance on grid energy, which matters particularly during a time of rising living costs.

Conclusion

This project is further proof of what is possible when housing providers, contractors and renewable energy specialists work together with shared purpose. Jigsaw Housing Association continues to show real leadership in retrofitting for the future, and we are proud to support that ambition.
