A home battery lets you store the energy your solar panels make in the day, then use it in the evening when the sun’s gone. Less energy bought from the grid… more of your own power used. The first question everyone asks is a fair one: what does it actually cost?

The short version
There’s no single price tag. A compact battery retro-fitted to an existing solar array sits at the lower end… a larger, high-capacity system installed as part of a new solar install is a bigger investment. Every job is different, due to the size of the system and the equipment used, so the honest answer is a tailored quote.
That’s the headline. The detail matters more.
What drives the price
Battery size (capacity). Measured in kilowatt-hours (kWh). A small 5kWh battery suits a modest home with lower evening use. A larger 10kWh or more suits a bigger household, an EV, or a heat pump. Bigger capacity, higher cost… but a better fit means better value over time.
Brand and quality. A cheaper battery can look tempting. But warranty length, usable capacity, and how many charge cycles it’s rated for all affect what you really get. We fit units built to last, not to cut corners.
Solar with battery, or battery on its own. Adding a battery during a solar install is usually the most cost-effective route… the team’s already on site and the systems are set up to talk to each other. Retro-fitting to an existing solar array is very doable too.
The bit that softens the cost
Battery storage carries 0% VAT until 31 March 2027. That applies to standalone batteries as well as ones fitted with solar, and it comes off the price automatically. It’s a real saving while it lasts.
Then there’s the payback. A battery earns its keep two ways: it cuts what you buy from the grid at peak rates, and paired with a smart tariff it lets you charge cheaply overnight and use that stored power by day.
